“Freedom Convoy” coming to Washington, D.C.?

With the Canadian “Freedom Convoy” now dissipated thanks to police intervention, truckers now have their sights set on Washington, D.C. (https://www.foxnews.com/us/dc-prepares-apparent-us-trucker-convoy-ottawa-protest-ends). They have already made a request for a permit with the National Park Service to allow 1,000 - 3,000 people to gather in the nation’s capital. In preparation, National Guard troops have been deployed and will remain until the end of next month. At least two tow trucks, on call by the city of Washington, D.C., have already been hired as well.

Compared to its Canadian counterpart, this convoy will be protesting several issues including gasoline prices, immigration, and vaccine mandates. Organizer Bob Bolus of Scranton, Pennsylvania said that he intends to use the convoy to shut down the city, saying, “I'll give you an analogy of that of a giant boa constrictor that basically squeezes you, chokes you and it swallows you, and that's what we're going to do the D.C." He has said that they will make sure to leave one lane open for emergency vehicles.

In the aftermath of the protests in Ottawa 191 people have been arrested and 389 charges have been filed. Several have had bank accounts and other assets frozen while others are being held without bail. Washington, D.C. police are already on high alert with 500 officers on daily civil disturbance units starting tomorrow (2/23). The convoy will begin in Los Angeles on Friday and will travel across the country in order to arrive in time for President Biden’s State of the Union Address. Texas Republican Gubernatorial candidate Allen West has already said that he and Ted Nugent will be joining the convoy when it passes through Texas (https://www.west4texas.com/news-210/ltc-allen-west-plans-to-join-%E2%80%98american-truckers-freedom-convoy%E2%80%99?fbclid=IwAR0dT3Q83rctqz-4sl9CNmBnEUSdZ3MKmYpkvCQM6ILUiI883HNBAD2sTLM).

Are these Freedom Convoys a healthy demonstration of the people’s right to protest or are they unnecessarily disruptive? Will they help bring attention to the growing issues throughout the U.S. and Canada, or will they only serve to further polarize opposing factions?
